“Hey Ma. Where are you?” I called out to her when I walked into her house.

“I’m in the kitchen,” she answered. When I walked into the kitchen, my mother was grabbing dishes out of the dishwasher.

“Where Pops at?” I asked her.

“I don’t know. Maybe with the same bitch that he has been messing with for the past three years,” she spat. My mother was fifty years old and could’ve passed for thirty. She was slim with a small face and long hair that she kept wrapped. Her brown skin was blemish-free. My father was ten years older than my mother. She was twenty and he was thirty when they had me. I had two younger siblings, but both were in college and barely came home, not even on holidays. They said that they were tired of seeing our parents argue all the time. But my pops always cheated on my mother. That’s all we saw growing up. My father didn’t hide it either and at one point in time, the females used to call the house phone. I honestly didn’t care what he did, and at times, I even lied for him when he had to leave the house.

My mother was going to say something else but the front door opened then shut. My father walked into the kitchen with his police uniform on. I hated that he was cop but I had it to my advantage. Well, except for one time and that was when I got into trouble for hustling outside of his jurisdiction. I was locked up for a few years behind it.

“Glad to see you, my son. Where have you been?” my father asked me before he sat at the kitchen table.

“Where have you been, Bernie?” my mother asked my father.

I knew they were about to argue so I headed straight to the door because when they argued it went on for hours. Nobody knew my father was a cop and I liked it that way. The niggas in the hood wouldn’t have dealt with me if they knew.
